Nissan Maxima Recall
Nissan Motor Co recalled 65, 000 Maximas manufactured from August 1991 - September
1992 due to some underbody impacts to the airbag sensor which activates and sends
a signal to the airbag, located in the center of the steering wheel, causing the
driver's side airbag to inflate and may result in minor injuries to the driver.
An estimated 97,000 Nissan Maximas manufactured from November 1992 - February
1993 were recalled due to clear coating of the aluminum wheels to protect the
metal finish and excessive coating can leave the wheel nuts an excess distance
from the wheel hub when tightened causing them to loosen over time.
This can cause the hub bolts to break and result in the wheel separating from
the vehicle and a possible accident. From August 1994 - February 1998 , about
747,000 Maximas were recalled because of the possibility that a mixture of mud
and salt got trapped between the fuel filler tube and wheel housing that may result
in fuel leaks which in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.
Moreover, the left rear seat belt retractor is mounted to the wheel housing and
in the event of significant corrosion; the mounting could result in a vehicle
crash.
Those Nissan Maximas manufactured March 1997 - July 1997 were likewise recalled.
One of the diodes used in the alternator may have been damaged when built. This
can eventually result in failure of the diode and an electrical short which could
melt the plastic housing. If the combustible gas emitted by the melting plastic
does not disperse due to air flow through the engine compartment, it could ignite
and in turn ignite the fan guide in the alternator compartment, and in turn ignite
the fan guide in the alternator.
In June 2001 - October 2001, around 39,000 Maximas equipped with an electronic
throttle control system. The stopper for the accelerator pedal will prevent excessive
movement of the accelerator position sensor. Should the driver applies excessive
force to the accelerator pedal while at the same time pushing it to the right,
the pedal can over travel due to the design of the pedal stopper. This will cause
the engine malfunction indicator lamp to come on and the engine speed to be severely
limited. If this occurs unexpectedly, it could lead to a crash.
Maximas produced from September. 2001 - October 2001 equipped with a traction
control system were also recalled. The odometer in the subject vehicles registers
distance in kilometers instead of miles as specified in the design. The odometer
does not have a label that indicates"kilometers" or"km" as required by fmvss
no. 101, "controls and displays." Dealers will inspect the odometer to determine
if it is correct and, if not, will replace the Speedometer/odometer assembly.
In 2002, Nissan again recalled 572,000 Maximas because the crank position sensor
may have an improper solder joint due to solder deformation caused by heat stress
accelerated by the existence of flux residue during the soldering process, this
could cause the "service engine soon" warning light to come on, create a no start
condition, cause reduced engine power, or cause the engine to stop running without
warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash.
